Wearing Wigs for the First Time: What You Need To Know

Wearing Wigs for the First Time: What You Need To Know

Buying a wig for the first time can feel like an overwhelming experience, but it doesn’t have to. Once you know the basics about finding the right fit and the difference between natural hair versus synthetic, you’ll be an expert.

Find out more about wearing wigs for the first time: what you need to know to find the best wig that suits you.

Caps

A cap is the base material of a wig, and the construction is often like a baseball hat. There are four cap types, and understanding the fit of each can help you determine which type is best for you:

  • Monofilament: This cap type is polyester with hand-tied hairs attached to mimic natural hair movement. The lightweight fabric is great for sensitive scalps and hotter weather, but they tend to be more expensive.
  • Lace-Front: A lace-front cap gives you the ability to style your hair without worrying that the edge of the wig will show; this is a good choice for women who have thinning hair in the front. The lace-front cap is very fragile and needs delicate handling.
  • Hand-Tied: Hand-tied caps are wigs made with each strand hand-sewn individually into a mesh. Either natural or synthetic, they are always made by hand and never a machine. The construction means there are no seams to irritate the scalp, often the most comfortable wig for women with total hair loss. They are very light and keep the head cool.
  • Wefted: Wefted wigs are capless and one of the most common wig types. The wefts are spaced out and allow the scalp to breathe, making it perfect for summertime heat. However, they are difficult to style, and they tend to be synthetic.

Natural Vs. Synthetic

Wigs are available in either natural human hair or synthetically made strands. They both have their advantages, but natural will always look and feel like your own hair. You can style and color them, but they require more maintenance and are more expensive than synthetic.

Even though synthetic wigs aren’t from real hair, they can look and feel natural. While lower-cost synthetic wigs will appear shiny, the higher-end pieces look and feel like natural hair. You cannot restyle or color like natural hair wigs, but they are more cost-effective, retain their styling even after washing, and are low maintenance.

Knowing the difference in caps and fibers will help you feel more confident when wearing wigs for the first time and what you need to know to look and feel great. Contact Instant Arewa Hair for any questions when selecting your first wig, like a lace-front locs wig.

All of them please

I love love love this wig! Wig? What wig? It's been so fun to see everyone's mouths drop when they find out I'm wearing a wig! My own mother had to do a close examination to believe it. Wish I could buy them all! Definitely will be back for more.

It looks very natural

I like the wig but I expected the plaits to be a little thicker. Other than that. I will probably buy another wig in the very near future.
